According to the latest report, in order to make browser extensions more secure for customers, Google notified developers about the new badge for the Chrome Web Store. Third-party extension developers will soon be able to earn ” Featured ” and ” Established ” badges that will mark reputable extensions that users can trust.

Google said it will award the “Featured” badge to extensions that follow best standards and practices around security, privacy, design, and user experience. Google will conduct the review manually, and developers can nominate their projects for badges starting April 20, 2022.
The second badge, “Established,” will automatically tag developers with verified accounts and no documented violations of the Developer Program Policy. Verified developers can show their status by including the official link in the “Offered by” field in the Chrome Web Store.
In addition to providing certification for premium extensions and developers, the new badge will benefit developers themselves. Developers with the badge ” may be ranked higher in search and filtering, ” and promoted in and out of the Chrome Web Store, Google said.
Moreover, Mozilla’s Firefox browser has a similar program called “Recommended Extensions.” Both companies stress that they do not allow developers to pay for badges. Google also wants to improve extensions in the Chrome Web Store by switching from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3 strategy.
Furthermore, developers can no longer submit extensions based on Manifest V2, and abandoned projects that fail to update to V3 will stop working in Chrome in January 2023.
