Installation rate of official version of Win11 in April appeared

Although Microsoft is vigorously promoting its latest Windows 11 system, the popularity of the operating system seems to have encountered difficulties. The latest market research shows that Windows 11 is only in the current market. 1.44% of Windows PCs run on even older systems like Windows XP and Windows 7.

Moreover, data comes from asset management software vendor Lansweeper, with Windows XP and Windows 7 holding a larger market share than Windows 11. Windows 7 had a market share of 4.7% and Windows XP had a market share of 1.71%. Windows 10 still leads the way in adoption with 80.34% installs, likely due to the ease of upgrades when the operating system launched.

On the consumer side, a big culprit for the slow adoption of Windows 11 may be due to the difficulty of upgrading older systems running Windows 10 or earlier to the latest OS. In the early days, Microsoft imposed hardware restrictions on Windows 11, and only PCs purchased within the past few years were eligible to run the latest operating system. 

According to a report by Lansweeper, more than half of PCs currently cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. “Lansweeper’s data based on approximately 30 million Windows devices across 60,000 organizations shows that, on average, only 44.4% of workstations are eligible for automatic upgrades, while the rest will not,” Lansweeper wrote in its market research.

Additionally, businesses may see little reason to upgrade to Windows 11 if existing software performs well on the current operating system. Historically, businesses have also been slower to upgrade than consumers, who are more concerned with system stability and consistency than exterior design.

Furthermore, while Lansweeper’s numbers show a modest adoption rate for Windows 11, AdDuplex’s numbers are different. AdDuplex reports that Windows 11 adoption is close to 9 percent, but it remains unclear how the two companies arrived at their respective numbers and why there is such a large discrepancy between the reports.
