Kioxia and Western Digital invest in new 3D flash memory factory

According to the latest report, Kioxia and Western Digital have reached a formal agreement to jointly invest in the first phase of the Fab7 (Y7) manufacturing plant at the Kioxia Yokkaichi Factory in Mie Prefecture, Japan.

The products include 112-layer, 162-layer, and 3D flash memory for future nodes, which are expected to be launched this year. Initial production begins in the fall.

“We are very pleased to further deepen our strategic partnership with Western Digital through our joint investment in Y7,” said Nobuo Hayasaka, president, and CEO of Kioxia, according to Evertiq.

“The rapid digitization of society supports the accelerated use of storage products. We will continue to leverage technology partnerships and economies of scale to develop and manufacture cutting-edge semiconductor products for organic growth.”

Siva Sivaram, President of Western Digital Technology and Strategy, said: “The joint investment in Y7 underscores our productive and positive relationship with Kioxia, our large global presence in the memory space, the continued importance of our storage products, and our increased presence in Japan.

“Our strategic partnership with Kioxia has resulted in the introduction of cutting-edge technologies while increasing the scale of manufacturing and R&D capabilities. We look forward to continuing to drive long-term success together.”

Moreover, Kioxia and Western Digital said the two companies will continue to maximize synergies through joint development of 3D flash memory and joint investment.
