Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S consoles sold more units than Xbox 360

According to the latest report, in the 17 months of its launch, the Xbox Series X|S sold nearly 4.5 million more units than the Xbox 360 (also the same 17-month period). VGChartz has released its March sales report as well as a sales comparison of the two consoles.

The report notes that both the Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox 360 were released in November, so the initial holiday season releases of the two systems are a fair comparison.

As of March 2022, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S consoles have sold 13.87 million units. It currently leads the Xbox 360 in sales by 4.49 million units, a gap that has widened by nearly half a million units (480,485) since last month.

By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 9.38 million units after 17 months on the market. The Xbox 360 didn’t hit the 10 million-unit sales mark until its 19th month, and it took 26 months for the Xbox 360 to reach the current sales of the Xbox Series X|S.

Why is this important? While the 360’s successor, the Xbox One, is now seen as a misstep by Microsoft “thanks” to its subpar presentation and message delivery seen as an “anti-gamer,” the Xbox 360 is important to Microsoft it was successful, attracted a large number of players, and eventually sold more than 85 million units.

Of course, one has to take into account the fact that the home console market is much larger today than it was in 2005, but the Xbox Series X|S continues to be sold and its life cycle is just beginning.
