Amazon announced plans for the striking 350-foot tower in February 2021 to support the second phase of its redevelopment plan. The new office building, which will be Amazon’s second headquarters, is expected to welcome more than 25,000 employees.

The Spiral is one of several approved office buildings, but the helix stands out. The spiral design features a walkable ramp with trees and greenery planted around the building, much like hiking in the mountains.

Moreover, Amazon said the building is designed to help people connect with nature, and outdoor climbing will be open to the public over the weekend. Since then, the plans have undergone a thorough review process in Arlington County, including multiple public hearings. Earlier this month, the county planning board voted 9-0 to support the project.

The county council voted 5-0 on Saturday to approve the plans. Other plans include park space, a community high school, and ground-level retail projects. Amazon said it hopes to complete the project by 2025.

With the District of Columbia banning skyscrapers, the Amazon Tower will be one of the tallest buildings in Arlington County. From certain vantage points, the spiral tower will dominate the region’s skyline, save for the Washington Monument.
