Moreover, the “halo” phenomenon that appears on the display screen, similar to the crescent moon in the night sky, refers to the phenomenon that the edge of the bright subject will appear white halo in the image with obvious contrast between light and dark.

Samsung Display compared and found that LCD (liquid crystal display) products using “local dimming” technology are prone to “halo”. Unlike normal LCDs, LCDs with “zone dimming” technology can turn part of the backlight on and off to show truer blacks.

However, such an LCD can only be adjusted by area, and cannot provide fine light control of pixels. When bright and dark colors are present at the same time, the LED backlight that is turned on can cause light leakage, resulting in a “halo”. At this time, the dark parts will appear a little hazy, and there will be a “halo” phenomenon around the bright parts.

Moreover, Samsung Display conducted an internal “halation degree (Halation)” evaluation, and the results showed that the “halation degree” of the self-luminous OLED was 0.00%, and there was no halo at all, while the LCD using the “regional dimming” technology appeared obvious.

When multiple people watch the content on the laptop at the same time, the degree of the halo is evaluated from 45-degree and 60-degree viewing angles, respectively. The results show that OLED does not appear halo at any angle; while LCD with “zone dimming” technology, compared to the front, the degree of halo increases 3 to 8 times as the viewing angle becomes larger.

In addition to the latest “Halo Free”, Samsung’s 13.3, 13.5, 14, 14.5, 15.6 and 16-inch OLED screens have also obtained the “No Flicker” from the certification company TUV Rheinland. (Flicker-Free)” certification.
