Apple iCloud password for Windows adds support for 2FA verification code generator

Apple updated the Windows version of the iCloud utility last year, bringing a password manager so that users can access and manage passwords stored in the iCloud keychain from a Windows PC. The iCloud utility has now been updated to support a code generator for two-factor authentication (2FA).

The latest Windows versions of iCloud Password (as part of the Windows iCloud utility) can now use two-factor authentication codes, also known as 2FA. 2FA support was originally added to iCloud Keychain in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, and now it’s finally available on Windows as well.

2FA Two-factor authentication codes are an extra layer of security that can be requested when logging into a website or app. These codes can be generated by password managers such as Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password, LastPass, and iCloud Keychain.

With the addition of support for two-factor authentication codes to iCloud Keychain, iPhone, iPad, and Mac users no longer need third-party apps to save and store these codes. Now, Windows users who rely on the iCloud password utility can also access the 2FA code generator. However, there are some limitations.

On Windows, iCloud passwords only work with Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers. This means that users using other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox will need to turn on the iCloud Password Utility every time they need to generate a 2FA code using iCloud Keychain.

With the latest update, Windows users can also add and view instructions in their iCloud Keychain passwords – a feature introduced in iOS 15.4. In November 2021, Apple also added the option to allow users to generate strong passwords using iCloud passwords on Windows.
