Google DeepMind announced almost every structure of protein universe

Google DeepMind announced today that it has released a free database that predicts the structure of almost every protein known to the scientific community. DeepMind made a splash in the scientific community in 2020 with its AlphaFold AI software, which makes highly accurate predictions of protein structures, and information that can help scientists understand how they work, helping to treat diseases and develop drugs.

Last summer, DeepMind first publicly released AlphaFold’s predictions through a database created in partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an initial set of data that includes 98 percent of all human proteins.

Today, DeepMind announced that the database is expanding to over 200 million structures, covering nearly every organism on Earth whose genomes have been sequenced. “You can think of it as covering the entire protein landscape, and we’re now at the beginning of a new era of digital biology,” DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said in a news release.

Moreover, protein structures from AlphaFold have been widely used by research teams around the world, contributing to research such as malaria vaccine candidates and honeybee health. “We believe AlphaFold is by far the most important contribution of artificial intelligence to advancing scientific knowledge,” Pushmeet Kohli, head of scientific artificial intelligence at DeepMind, said in a statement.
