Samsung officially denies it has stopped developing Exynos mobile phone chips

Samsung today denied rumors that it will stop its Exynos chip business, and there are rumors that the company will skip Exynos chips in flagship phones in 2023 or even 2024.

According to South Korea’s Mainichi Economic Daily, Samsung said on a conference call in the second quarter of 2022 that it would stop its Exynos business as “completely false.” “Currently, we are restructuring our system-on-chip (SoC) business model and are working on a plan to strengthen our mid- to long-term competitiveness,” Samsung explained.

Samsung added: “In particular, we are focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of next-generation mobile Exynos and working to maximize market share for key customers by strengthening cooperation with leading IP companies and starting early development.”

It was previously reported that Samsung is working on an ambitious custom SoC for its Galaxy flagship phones, which is said to arrive in 2025. Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said, “The Galaxy S23 may not use Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 2300 chip because it can’t compete with the SM8550 in every way.

The SM8550 is optimized for TSMC’s design rules, so in terms of computing power and power efficiency Clear advantage over SM8450 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) / SM8475 (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1). Qualcomm / SM8550 will gain more market share in the high-end Android market in 2023. The recession has less impact on the high-end market, so the growth in market share will significantly benefit Qualcomm and TSMC.”
