Google is working on an easier way to set Chrome as the default browser in modern versions of Windows. As spotted by Leopeva64-2, the commit on Chromium Gerrit describes a new control that lets users set Chrome as the default browser on Windows 11 and Windows 10 with one click.
The current version of Chrome allows changing the default browser in its settings, but doing so requires switching to the Windows Settings app. Firefox, on the other hand, has a more convenient one-click solution that Mozilla is introducing in 2021. The same implementation will soon make its way to Chrome.

Here are the code changes on Chromium Gerrit as described by Google: “Make Chrome the default browser. This feature works by browsing the relevant url protocols and file associations, such as http, https, .html, etc., and setting the relevant registry keys directly for each.”
This feature has not yet appeared in any Chrome beta channels.
Microsoft has previously taken steps to make it more difficult to switch Windows 11 Edge to other browsers, and the controversy over changing the default browser has grown. Instead of offering a one-click option, Microsoft forces users to change more than a dozen file associations to open links in Chrome or other browsers.
After a backlash, Microsoft backed down and fixed the issue. But some parts of Windows 10 and Windows 11 are still associated with the Edge browser, and users can make changes using the unofficial MSEdgeRedirect tool.
