Amazon announces it will discontinue Amazon Drive cloud storage service after 11 years

Amazon announced that it will end the Amazon Drive service, while also giving Amazon Drive users enough time to switch to alternatives. The Amazon Drive cloud storage service was launched in March 2011 as a “secure cloud storage service for Amazon customers’ backup files,” offering 5GB of free storage and apps for Android, iOS, and the web.

Speaking of Amazon Drive’s decision to discontinue the support, Amazon said: “We’re taking this opportunity to focus more fully on Amazon Photos, offering customers a dedicated photo and video storage solution.”

Amazon’s email to customers mentions: ” We will continue to provide customers with the ability to securely back up, share and organize photos and videos using Amazon Photos. ”

However, for files other than photos and videos, users must download them manually from the website. Amazon also recommends the Amazon Photos desktop app for Windows and macOS if you need to retrieve larger files.

The Amazon Drive service will end support on December 31, 2023, but new uploads will no longer be supported on January 31, 2023, and the Amazon Drive app for Android and iOS will be removed on October 31, 2022 shelf.

If you don’t want to lose data, users are advised to migrate to Amazon Photos, which offers 100GB, 1TB, and 2TB of storage for $1.99 per month, $6.99 per month, and $11.99 per month, respectively.
