According to the latest report, jobs in the metaverse are disappearing as big tech companies such as Google and Facebook have slowed down their hiring. At the same time, there are signs of a slowdown in hiring across the tech industry, with companies laying off or freezing hiring, making tech workers increasingly uneasy. Job postings in tech hubs such as San Francisco and Austin, Texas, have dropped 8.4 percent over the past four weeks, according to job search platform Indeed.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s big bet on virtual reality and other emerging immersive technologies has spurred companies of all kinds to seek out experts in the metaverse, said Jin Yan, an economist at Revelio Labs. , which may have caused a “short-term hype on the demand side”. Now, the hype is starting to confront a non-virtual sober reality as companies, increasingly concerned about the economic situation, begin to recalibrate their hiring needs and personnel budgets.

Zuckerberg said on Wednesday’s Meta earnings call that he would “slow down” the pace of long-term investments and scale back hiring due to the lack of revenue. Apple, Meta’s virtual reality rival, said on Thursday that it would be “more careful” when it comes to hiring. Meanwhile, Google parent Alphabet has also slowed hiring.

While there are fewer full-time jobs in the metaverse, the number of freelance jobs in metaverse-related fields such as avatar development and 3D design has more than tripled, according to freelance talent marketplace Fiverr International.
