With the continuous development of technology, the concept of “smart fire protection” has emerged in recent years. “Smart Fire” aims to minimize the risk and impact of fire by utilizing the latest technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and mobile Internet+.

Recently, the research institutions published a new study on the use of artificial intelligence to complete firefighting tasks. The study introduced that the most terrifying thing in fires is not the roaring fire, but the flash fire that is difficult to detect in advance.
Flashover is a deadly fire phenomenon in which almost any combustible material in the environment suddenly catches fire, making it impossible for firefighters to escape. While firefighters try to identify flashovers through black smoke and high temperatures, flashovers are difficult to predict.
To this end, the research group developed a predictive neural model called FlashNet. In more than 41,000 digital fire simulation tests, the model predicted flashover 30 seconds in advance with 92.1 percent accuracy. Therefore, through this artificial intelligence technology, firefighters will be able to predict flashovers in advance. This will effectively improve the safety of firefighters when putting out fires and may be able to save the lives of firefighters at critical moments.
However, the researchers say there is still a long way to go before the neural model can be put into practical use. In the next step, the researchers will conduct field tests to put it into practical use as soon as possible.
