Apple removes network location feature in macOS 13 Ventura

Posted on

According to the latest report, in addition to redesigning the system settings app of macOS 13 Ventura, Apple also removed the network location feature introduced in version 10.0 in macOS Ventura. This feature allows users to switch between different network preferences in different locations and situations.

According to Apple documentation, the feature is useful in the following situations:

  • You use the same type of network (like Ethernet) at work and at home, but the settings you use at work don’t allow your Mac to automatically connect to the same type of network at home.
  • Your Mac is connected to many types of network services (such as Wi-Fi and Ethernet) at work and at home, but at work you want your Mac to try connecting to an Ethernet network first, and at home, you want your Mac first tries to connect to the Wi-Fi network. In other words, you want to set up a different service order for each place.
  • Your Mac is not connected to a network, so you want to quickly reset your network settings for testing purposes without losing your current network settings.

Given that macOS Ventura is still in beta, it’s possible that the network location feature will return at some point, but that’s unlikely, as Apple marked Tyler Loch’s bug report about the missing network location feature as “works as currently designed.” work as the current design.

In addition, although Apple removed the network location feature in macOS Ventura, the command-line tool “network setup” that Apple used to control the feature still exists in the latest beta version of macOS Ventura. This means that third-party developers can use this to create an app that replaces the network location feature that was removed from the System Settings app.

Apple launched macOS Ventura at WWDC in 2022, introducing a new multitasking interface, revamping many applications, and adding many features.
