Southeast Asia’s smartphone shipments drop 7% in Q2 2022: Canalys

Canalys data showed that in the second quarter of 2022, smartphone shipments in Southeast Asia were 24.5 million units, down 7% from the first quarter. Among them, Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi, Vivo, and realme ranked in the top five with 23%, 18%, 16%, 12%, and 11% shares respectively.

At the manufacturer level, demand for Samsung’s mid-to-high-end A-series was lower than expected, resulting in a 19% drop in Q2 performance compared to Q1; OPPO ranked second with an 18% market share; Xiaomi’s Q2 shipments were 4 million Taiwan, the same as the previous quarter, ranked third; Vivo and realme both ranked in the top five, with shipments of 3.2 million and 2.6 million units, respectively.

At the market level, Indonesia’s shipments pushed up to 9.1 million. Samsung leads the market with a 20% market share. Vivo strengthened the promotion of retail and online sales channels, ranking second with a market share of 19%; Transsion increased its online brand promotion of Infinix, surpassing realme for the first time in the Indonesian market, ranking fifth. Infinix’s Hot series, priced under $200, has attracted many consumers.

The Philippines market shipped 4.4 million units, maintaining its position as the second largest smartphone market in Southeast Asia. Manufacturers stepped up their promotional activities in the second quarter, with shipments up 4% from the previous quarter.

Affected by the depreciation of the Thai baht, inflation, and slow economic recovery, the smartphone market in Thailand fell by 14% month-on-month to 4 million units; shipments in Vietnam’s smartphone market also fell by 32% month-on-month to 3.1 million units; Mobile phone market shipments increased 6% compared to the first quarter to 2.4 million units.
