The latest data shows that the ratings of streaming media platforms led by Netflix surpassed cable networks for the first time in July 2022, occupying the largest share of US TV viewing for the month. Data only includes shows watched on TV and connected TVs, mobile or web streaming is not taken into account. This result is expected, as streaming usage has continued to climb in recent years, while traditional cable has declined amid the ongoing impact of outage losses.

In July, streaming services accounted for a record 34.8% of total household consumption in U.S. households, compared with 34.4% for cable and 21.6% for broadcast. Streaming has already surpassed broadcast in usage before, and this is the first time it has surpassed cable.
Among them, Netflix once again captured the largest share of overall TV viewership among streaming media platforms with 8.0%, setting a new all-time high. This is largely due to the nearly 18 billion viewing minutes of “Stranger Things 4” in July, as well as the nearly 11 billion viewing minutes of “Vichen River” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
Overall, streaming usage increased 3.2% in July compared to June, with an average of nearly 191 billion minutes per week. Compared to June, cable TV ratings fell 2% in July. Sports channels saw the biggest drop in viewership, down 15.4 percent from June and 34 percent from the opening of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo during the same period a year ago. In addition, the broadcast of the NHL and NBA playoffs also has a large impact on sports ratings.
