Samsung phones may shrink and extend based on where you are: Report

Galaxy S phones are excellent and Samsung is also bringing amazing Galaxy Z foldable phones to the market. Beyond that, Samsung is finding ways to make the smartphone experience epic, with a recent patent application indicating how you use future Galaxy slidable/rollable phones that shrink and extend.

Samsung has been working on slidable display prototypes for years and showcased at many times such as MWC. Future Galaxy slidable phones may be equipped with a rollable display, which would allow the device to shrink and extend as per the user’s requirement.

Future Samsung phones may shrink and extend based on where you are.

With a slidable display, you can turn your smartphone from a regular phone to a large-screen tablet, even without folding the screen. Earlier this year, the Korean tech giant presented the Slideable Flex Duet concept, which features a display that extends both sides.

Back in 2020, Samsung registered a design patent as well as the working functionality of smartphones. At first impression, you might determine it odd, but it would become reality a day, for sure. Through patent, the company described four different modes, which a slidable phone could follow.

As mentioned in the patent application, the four modes are:

  1. Band Mode
  2. Phone Mode
  3. Phablet Mode
  4. Tablet Mode

Band Mode: This shrinks the smartphone’s dimensions, making its form factor narrower in order to deliver excellent grip while walking on the street.

Phone Mode: It turns the slidable device into a regular smartphone shape for regular use, or you can use it indoors/outdoors with your primary hand, even when you are walking.

Phablet Mode: This mode makes the regular phone a Phablet, which you can use while standing on the street with both hands. It will provide a better typing experience as well as a relaxed feel to the user.

Tablet mode: As the name suggests, slidable phone can turn into a tablet by extending the rollable display from both sides. When a user is sitting inside home, this mode will enhance app navigation and typing experience.

Apart from the current one, Samsung registered various design patents and branding trademarks. It’s up to the company whether it produces such a product or not, which it secured via patent registration. Meanwhile, you can see the full patent application and supporting documents on the WIPO site.
