Microsoft to deprecate driver synchronization updates in Windows server update services

In the ever-evolving landscape of software maintenance, Microsoft frequently updates its services, adding new features and removing those that are either outdated or underutilized. This continual refinement ensures that their tools remain relevant and efficient. As part of this ongoing process, Microsoft is planning a significant change to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a tool widely used for managing and distributing software updates within organizational networks.

Microsoft to Deprecate Driver Synchronization Updates via Windows Server Update Services

Microsoft has announced that starting April 18, 2025, it will deprecate the driver synchronization capability in WSUS. This feature has been instrumental for IT administrators, allowing them to automate the distribution of driver updates across their networks. By ensuring that driver updates are deployed en masse as soon as they become available, this functionality has enhanced the stability and hardware compatibility of numerous PCs.

With the upcoming deprecation, IT administrators will need to adapt by manually downloading drivers from the Microsoft Update Catalog or by switching to third-party update management solutions. Alternatively, tools such as Microsoft Intune can be employed to manage driver updates effectively.

Reason for Deprecation

The decision to deprecate WSUS driver synchronization stems from a survey conducted by Microsoft, revealing that only 34% of WSUS users utilize the tool for driver synchronization. Of these users, a significant portion is already transitioning to different solutions, with merely 8% expressing concerns about the deprecation’s impact on their operations. Although Microsoft has not explicitly stated the reasons behind this move, the survey results indicate that maintaining the WSUS driver synchronization feature is no longer justified.

For IT administrators who may be affected by this change, Microsoft advises transitioning to alternative solutions to ensure continued efficient management of driver updates.
