Samsung PM9E1 SSD Begins Mass Production with Enhanced Security Features
Samsung’s PM9E1 SSD, which offers some of the highest performance in the industry, is now in mass production. This drive was first announced in early August, and it’s now being securely shipped from Samsung’s semiconductor plants. The PM9E1 is designed for powerful on-device AI applications, specifically for PCs and laptops, where both processing power and energy efficiency are crucial.
This SSD features a 5nm-based controller and Samsung’s latest eighth-generation (V8) V-NAND technology, enabling it to deliver exceptional speed and performance. The PM9E1 uses PCIe 5.0, which supports extremely fast read and write speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s and 13 GB/s, respectively—making it 50% faster than earlier models. It can also transfer a 14GB large language model (LLM) from storage to memory in less than a second, highlighting its AI-readiness.
AI Optimization and Efficiency Samsung’s PM9E1 is built to handle the rising demand for on-device AI, where performance and energy efficiency are critical. This SSD has a 50% boost in power efficiency compared to previous versions, making it a strong choice for high-demand computing tasks.
Tightened Security Measures Samsung has also taken significant steps to ensure the security of the PM9E1 during its distribution. The company has implemented extra protections to prevent potential supply chain attacks, such as tampering or forgery during production. These enhancements come through the use of the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) version 1.2, which includes features like Secure Channel, Device Authentication, and Firmware Tampering Attestation.
Although pricing and release dates are still unknown, Samsung’s latest SSD technology is now rolling off production lines, signaling a commercial release shortly. Keep an eye out for more updates soon.
