Samsung rolls out October 2024 Galaxy S23 security update and One UI enhancements for Smart TVs

In the US, Samsung has recently begun rolling out the October 2024 security update for its flagship Galaxy S23 series, including the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. This update enhances the stability and security of the devices by fixing various vulnerabilities and performance issues, and it’s expected to be available in other countries soon.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series: October 2024 Security Update Details

The security update is delivered via One UI builds with the following versions:

  • Galaxy S23: S911USQS4CXI4
  • Galaxy S23 Plus: S916USQS4CXI4
  • Galaxy S23 Ultra: S918USQS4CXI4

The installation package is approximately 400MB in size and includes critical fixes to improve the user experience by addressing issues found in previous software versions. This update focuses on strengthening the device’s overall security by patching several vulnerabilities within the Android system and Samsung’s proprietary software.

Key Security Fixes:

  • Google Fixes: The update addresses 30 security issues identified by Google, including two critical and 28 high-severity vulnerabilities.
  • Samsung Fixes: Samsung has resolved 12 vulnerabilities specific to its system services and Knox security, with additional performance optimizations related to its semiconductor technology.

This security patch is currently being rolled out to carrier-locked devices, with plans to release it for unlocked models shortly. The distribution process is gradual, so some users may need to wait a few hours or days for the update to become available.

Samsung’s One UI Update for Smart TVs: What’s New

In addition to mobile updates, Samsung is also introducing a major software update for its 2023 smart TV lineup. Announced at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024, Samsung has started rolling out One UI based on Tizen 8.0 to its smart TVs, enhancing the user interface and introducing new features.

The update is now available for Samsung’s 2023 smart TVs, including the S90C OLED TV, which has been upgraded from Tizen 7.0 to version 2011 of the new software. This update includes an upgraded web engine, moving from version 94 to 108, along with a range of improvements in gaming, content management, and device connectivity.

Key Features of the One UI Tizen 8.0 Update:

  1. New Home Screen Layout:
    The update brings tabs like “For You,” “Live,” and “Apps,” offering easy access to personalized recommendations, live content, and apps.
  2. Watch Later:
    A new “Watch Later” feature allows users to save content to a dedicated list for easy access.
  3. Multi Control:
    Users can control multiple Samsung devices signed into the same account with a single keyboard and mouse, enabling seamless cross-device functionality.
  4. Workout Tracker:
    By connecting a Galaxy Watch, real-time workout data, such as calorie consumption and heart rate, can now be tracked directly on your TV.
  5. Game Bar Enhancements:
    The gaming experience is further improved with a revamped Game Bar, offering an easier way to access game settings and performance tweaks.
  6. Improved UI Elements:
    Various UI elements from Samsung smartphones, like animations and app icons for Bixby, Gallery, Samsung Internet, and SmartThings, are now reflected on smart TVs. Additionally, the new interface brings smaller, more modern icons and compact menus, with frequently used settings displayed prominently for faster access.
  7. Daily Board & ConnecTime:
    The “Daily Board” allows users to personalize their TV screen with beautiful wallpapers and widgets. ConnecTime introduces video calling and mobile screen sharing directly on the TV, expanding communication possibilities across devices.
  8. Expanded Accessibility Features:
    The update improves accessibility options, including shortcuts and customizable settings based on usage patterns.
  9. SmartThings and IoT Integration:
    IoT cameras and devices can now be controlled directly from the TV via the SmartThings app, allowing for an integrated smart home experience.
  10. Q-Symphony Audio Upgrade:
    Enhanced audio settings allow the use of Wi-Fi speaker setups, offering an improved surround sound experience with compatible devices.

Samsung promises that its smart TVs will receive operating system updates for seven years, ensuring long-term support and feature enhancements for users.
