One UI 7 Introduces Android 15’s app archive feature and Galaxy S24 series receives December 2024 security update

Posted on

Samsung’s One UI 7 is bringing the App Archive feature from Android 15 to Galaxy smartphones. This feature allows users to save storage space by archiving unused apps without fully uninstalling them. The app’s data and settings remain intact, making it easy to restore later.

What is App Archiving?

App Archiving temporarily removes unused apps while keeping their data safe. This clears app software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications, but the app icon and user data stay on your device. You can restore the app without losing progress or settings when you need it again. For example, if you haven’t played a large game in months, you can archive it to free up space while keeping your saved game intact.

How to Use App Archiving

You can archive apps manually or enable automatic archiving for hands-free management.

Manual Archiving:

  1. Open the app settings.
  2. Select the app to archive.
  3. Tap the archive option.

Archived apps will have dimmed icons with an archive symbol, showing they are stored away.

Automatic Archiving: Enable this feature in the Play Store, and the system will automatically archive unused apps to save space proactively.

Restoring Archived Apps:

  1. Tap the dimmed app icon.
  2. The system will reinstall the app, provided there’s enough storage available.

Availability

As confirmed by IceUniverse, One UI 7 Beta includes the App Archiving feature. A public rollout is expected early next year. You can check a preview of this feature in action via posts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

December 2024 Security Update for Galaxy Devices

The Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra recently received the December 2024 security patch through the One UI 7 Beta update. Samsung has also released a standalone update for devices still running Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1. The Galaxy S24 FE, not part of the beta program, is also receiving this security update.

Update Details:

  • Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra: Rolling out in Korea with build number S92xNKSS5AXKA.
  • Galaxy S24 FE: Available in Europe with build number S721BXXS3AXK6.

Other devices, like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, are also getting the December update in Europe. These updates focus on security fixes, with no new features expected until the full One UI 7 release.

Samsung’s integration of Android 15’s features, like App Archiving, highlights its dedication to enhancing device performance and usability. While the feature may seem simple, its practical benefits make it a valuable addition for managing device storage.
