One UI 7 Updates: App Lock demand, beta improvements, and more
Samsung’s One UI 7 is generating buzz with beta updates and user feedback. Here’s a breakdown of the key developments:
Growing Demand for App Lock:
Galaxy users are increasingly requesting a built-in App Lock feature in One UI 7. This would allow users to secure specific apps, like photos or social media, with a PIN, password, or biometrics, offering enhanced privacy without the need for the Secure Folder’s cloned app approach. Samsung has acknowledged this feedback and is evaluating its feasibility for future updates. While some regions already have this feature, global rollout is under consideration.
One UI 7 Beta 2: Key Changes and Fixes:
The second beta for the Galaxy S24 series addresses several user concerns and bugs:
- “Secured by Knox” Watermark Removed: The previously added watermark on the app drawer, which some users found distracting, has been removed.
- Screenshot Lag Fixed: An issue causing a delay in capturing screenshots has been resolved, ensuring smoother performance.
- Other Improvements: The update also includes fixes for issues related to the Now Bar, display, DeX, widgets, GPS, Game Booster, animations, Samsung Messages, and the Calls app.
Hidden Feature: Wi-Fi Network Filtering:
One UI 7 includes a hidden feature that allows users to filter Wi-Fi networks based on various criteria, such as security (open or secured), frequency band (2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz), and Wi-Fi standard (Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7). This allows users to quickly find the most suitable network. This feature can be accessed by going to Settings » Connections » Wi-Fi » More Options » Intelligent Wi-Fi and tapping the Intelligent Wi-Fi version number multiple times until the Connectivity Labs menu appears. Then you can enable the Use filter menu toggle. The available filters depend on the device’s Wi-Fi capabilities.
Security Updates for Older Devices:
Samsung is also rolling out the December 2024 security update to older devices. The Galaxy S21 series is currently receiving this update in the US, bringing important security patches and addressing vulnerabilities in Android and Exynos chips. Users can check for updates in their phone’s settings menu.
Beta Program Availability:
The One UI 7 Beta Program is currently available in select countries, including the US, Germany, the UK, Korea, India, and Poland. Users in these regions can sign up to test new features and provide feedback to Samsung.
In summary, Samsung is actively developing and refining One UI 7 based on user feedback, focusing on improved privacy, performance, and user experience.
