Snapdragon 6 Gen 4: Making mid-range phones great for gaming

Snapdragon 6 Gen 4

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is Qualcomm’s latest chip designed to make mid-range phones perform more like top-end models, especially when it comes to gaming. While we often get excited about the latest high-end phones, the real action these days seems to be happening in the mid-range segment.

This new chip from Qualcomm focuses on three main areas: gaming, photography, and artificial intelligence (AI). It uses the same Kryo CPU as found in the higher-end 8 Elite series, combined with Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU for processing AI tasks.

Having an NPU is a big deal because it allows phones to handle complex tasks like real-time translations during calls or writing messages without needing to connect to the internet. Plus, with this chip, you get a 5G modem and Wi-Fi 6E for fast internet speeds.

For gamers, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is a treat. It supports up to 4K gaming with a feature called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution. There’s also Fast Blend, which makes games run more smoothly by rendering them faster. The GPU has something called the Adreno Frame Motion Engine, which might help in generating frames for a smoother gameplay experience. And for audio lovers, there’s support for lossless sound.

Compared to the last version, this chip offers an 11% boost in CPU performance and a 29% increase in GPU power, suggesting it’s tailored for gamers. Battery life is also expected to improve by about 12%, though these are just initial estimates and could vary in actual use.

Brands like Oppo and Honor are set to launch phones with this new chip shortly, though we don’t know the exact models yet. We’ll just have to wait to see which phones will include this exciting new technology.
