Samsung Galaxy phones with Snapdragon could get 8 Android updates

Samsung has been a leader in keeping Android phones updated for a long time. It started by promising four big Android updates for its devices—a huge deal back then. Last year, it upped the game, offering seven major updates for the Galaxy S24. Now, there’s talk that Samsung might stretch that to eight updates for future phones!
This is possible thanks to Google and Qualcomm teaming up. They’ve decided to help phone makers like Samsung keep devices fresh with up to eight years of Android updates and security fixes. Qualcomm will supply the tools and software tweaks needed, so companies won’t have to worry about support from the chip side. They’re even upgrading something called the Android Common Kernel twice to make this work smoothly over eight years.
But don’t expect every Android phone to get this perk. The plan kicks off with fancy chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite, found in the Galaxy S25, and only for phones starting with Android 15. It’ll cover the next five batches of Snapdragon 7 and 8 series chips coming out soon. So, this is mostly for high-end gadgets, not the cheaper or mid-level ones.
Samsung’s already doing seven updates for its top phones from 2024 onward. Some special business models even get eight. The big question is whether Samsung will roll out eight updates for regular phones and tablets in the future—we’ll have to wait and see!
Chris Patrick, a big name at Qualcomm, shared his excitement: “We’re thrilled to team up with Google and push Android updates further on Snapdragon devices. This step gives phone makers more options and makes things better for users. We can’t wait to see more phones stay updated for years!” With this news, Samsung fans have something to look forward to—longer-lasting phones that keep up with the latest Android goodies.
