Samsung’s new phone screen shines super bright at 5,000 Nits

Samsung Display, the top maker of mobile OLED screens, has revealed its latest screen with an amazing 5,000 nits of brightness. They’re showing it off at the MWC 2025 event happening now in Barcelona, Spain.
Samsung’s OCF OLED Screen Hits 5,000 Nits
This new OLED screen for phones and other gadgets skips the usual polarizer—a layer that dims the display. Samsung calls this tech “on-cell film” (OCF), and they were the first to use it. It makes the screen easier to see outside, saves battery power, keeps the device cooler, and helps the screen last longer.
Bright and Smart: OCF OLED in Action
Samsung first used OCF screens in foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. Now, they’re bringing it to regular phones and even laptops that can roll up. At MWC 2025, Samsung is highlighting these screens, which hit a peak brightness of 5,000 nits across 10% of the screen area.
That’s a big deal—some Chinese screen makers claim 6,000 nits, but only on tiny 1% or 5% patches. For movie fans, this screen can shine at 3,000 nits. Samsung says it’s 1.5 times brighter than older screens without using more power—an awesome achievement if it holds up.
No Polarizer, More Power
A polarizer is a thin sheet that blocks outside light from messing with the screen. The catch? It cuts brightness by nearly half. Samsung figured out a way to stack the screen parts differently, ditching the polarizer while still keeping out extra light. This trick keeps the screen bright using just 63% of the usual power and makes it 20% thinner.
They started this with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and now it’s in regular phones, too. Joohyung Lee, the boss of Samsung Display’s mobile team, said, “We’re pushing forward with cool ideas like OCF to lead the way in the AI age.” This screen tech could change how we use our devices!
