Google Duo merging with Google Meet app

Back in 2022, it was reported that Google is planning to merge the two video calling app into one – Google Duo and Google Meet. Now, Google is officially bringing the two apps together under the Meet name. Later this year, Google renamed the Duo app to Google Meet, which will available to everyone at no cost.

According to the company, Google Meet is its “one connected solution” and the latest move is taken to provide unified capabilities of the Meet app. In the coming weeks, ahead of merging, all the Google Meet features will be added to the Duo app.

Both Google video calling apps offer overlapping features. Speaking about Google Duo, it was introduced in 2016 and can support group calls for up to 32 persons. In addition to this, it has doodles, masks, family mode, fun effects, and supports video calling on tablets, foldable, smart devices, and TVs.Then in 2020, Google launched Google Meet with 100 features and improvements for a better meeting experience. It brings a more intuitive interface, virtual backgrounds, effects, live captions, light adjustments, noise cancellation, and much more.

Ahead of moving toward the new Google Meet app, the company will upgrade Google Duo on Android and iOS to order to enhance video calling and meeting features.

New features for Google Duo:

  • Customize virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings
  • Schedule meetings so everyone can join at a time that’s convenient for them
  • Use in-meeting chat for deeper engagement
  • Live share content to enable interaction with all participants on the call
  • Get real-time closed captions to better support accessibility and boost participation
  • Increase the size of video calls from a current limit of 32 to 100 participants
  • Integrate with other tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages, and more
